چکیده

This paper suggests that a major deeciency in computational approaches to manufacturing design is the lack of applicable models of human behavior. Starting with a discrepancy between the practices of lean manufacturing|practices that recommend small interprocess buuer sizes|and the practices of manufacturing simulation|practices that treat human behavior as an uncorrelated, random process, which when optimized recommends large interprocess buuer sizes|two plausible models of diierent facets of human behavior are created, simulated, and reconciled with the smaller buuers of lean manufacturing systems. The rst model, the local demotivation-motivation model, suggests that lean thinking can be partially explained by the general tendencies of human beings to (1) get behind as their work piles up, and (2) work much harder as a deadline or constraint approaches. Representative simulations demonstrate this eeect and show how keeping buuers small can oftentimes be the wisest course of action. The second model, the line-wise helpfulness model, suggests that in systems where co-workers can be encouraged to help one another that a form of adaptive or dynamic buuering can take place between many processes; this kind of buuering can be more eeective than the static kind when used alone, and the buuering eeect can be maximized by using small buuers, which tend to permit more eecient propagation of information between stations. The paper concludes by suggesting that more modeling combining insight into human behavior, manufacturing savvy, and an appropriate computational-analytical basis is necessary if eeective computational design optimization of manufacturing systems is to become more streetwise and thus more widely believed and used.

Behavioral Considerations in Developing Web Information Systems: User-centered Design Agenda

The current paper explores designing a web information retrieval system regarding the searching behavior of users in real and everyday life. Designing an information system that is closely linked to human behavior is equally important for providers and the end users.  From an Information Science point of view, four approaches in designing information retrieval systems were identified as system-...

Parallel computation framework for optimizing trailer routes in bulk transportation

We consider a rich tanker trailer routing problem with stochastic transit times for chemicals and liquid bulk orders. A typical route of the tanker trailer comprises of sourcing a cleaned and prepped trailer from a pre-wash location, pickup and delivery of chemical orders, cleaning the tanker trailer at a post-wash location after order delivery and prepping for the next order. Unlike traditiona...

Behavioral study of piston manufacturing plant through stochastic models

Piston plays a vital role in almost all types of vehicles. The present study discusses the behavioral study of a piston manufacturing plant. Manufacturing plants are complex repairable systems and therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the performance of a piston manufacturing plant using stochastic models. The stochastic model is an efficient performance evaluator for repairable systems. In...

Reliability Based Maintenance and Human Resources Work-Rest Scheduling in Manufacturing System

In today's competitive market, all manufacturers attempt to improve their maintenance policy in order to decrease the cost of failure and increase the quality of products, but most of these attempts do not consider the role of humans involved in a manufacturing system. Human resources are the main factor in manufacturing that has an undeniable effect on products quality, machines reliability, s...
